George F. Will - More questions for nominee Elena Kagan
George F. Will - More questions for nominee Elena Kagan:
Pursuant to Elena Kagan's expressed enthusiasm for confirmation hearings that feature intellectual snap, crackle and pop, here are some questions the Senate Judiciary Committee can elate her by asking:
-- Regarding campaign finance 'reforms': If allowing the political class to write laws regulating the quantity, content and timing of speech about the political class is the solution, what is the problem?
-- If the problem is corruption, do we not already have abundant laws proscribing that?"

Now that the Supreme Court of the United States has decided that the Second Amendment to the Constitution means that individual Americans have a right to bear arms, what can we expect?
Those who have no confidence in ordinary Americans may expect a bloodbath, as the benighted masses start shooting each other, now that they can no longer be denied guns by their betters. People who think we shouldn't be allowed to make our own medical decisions, or decisions about which schools our children attend, certainly are not likely to be happy with the idea that we can make our own decisions about how to defend ourselves."

Finance Bill's Fate Uncertain in Senate - WSJ.com:
WASHINGTON—The most sweeping overhaul of financial regulations since the 1930s is on a knife's edge as Democrats scramble to secure the Senate votes needed to pass the legislation.
The death of Sen. Robert Byrd (D., W.Va.) robs Democrats of a vote to push the bill toward final passage. Another Democratic senator, who voted against an earlier version of the legislation, said Monday he wouldn't support the final product either. And the late addition of a fee on banks and hedge funds to cover the cost of the legislation is roiling the few Republicans thought likely to vote for the package."

My Way News - Obama, activists to push on immigration reform:
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama is enlisting activists and labor leaders in a push for comprehensive immigration legislation that will showcase Republican opposition and include a speech by the president.
The strategy was discussed during a meeting Monday by a range of prominent labor leaders and activist groups. Participants said Obama reiterated his support for immigration legislation but noted the political realities that have stalled it in Congress.
Latino leaders say they will work in coming months to pressure Republicans to give way and support an immigration bill - and make opponents pay at the ballot box if they don't."

Fannie-Freddie Bailout Could Cost Taxpayers $1 Trillion - CNBC:
For American taxpayers, now on the hook for some $145 billion in housing losses connected to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans, that amount could be just the tip of the iceberg.

The president’s debt commission is facing plenty of challenges. Washington’s supercharged partisan atmosphere is going to make it hard to find common ground, and the bruising battle over health care has left both parties wary of another full-on confrontation. But the debt commission may also suffer from an unusual problem for a blue-ribbon panel: a lack of credibility.
Andy Stern, the retiring head of the nation’s largest labor union, is an outspoken member of President Obama’s debt commission and an ardent advocate of reforming the nation’s retirement system. He also left his job running the Service Employees International Union with a mess of financial troubles that will end up costing taxpayers dearly."

On Friday, we found out that House and Senate conferees closed a marathon session with an early-morning announcement that a deal had been reached on the Dodd-Frank Financial Overhaul bill. The mainstream media, of course, breathlessly applauded Congress for making this deal and “fixing” our financial woes.
At 2,000 pages, I prepared myself for a long weekend of reading complex statutory language. After all, I heard that Barney Frank wanted the House of Representatives to vote on the bill by Tuesday, so that President Obama could sign it by July 4. Clearly, time was of the essence.
The only obstacle? I couldn’t find a copy of the bill.

Media out to get Bachmann:
Rep. Michele Bachmann is a target of the local and national media for one very good reason – because she's an extremely effective advocate of the uniquely American-style of liberty, justice and morality.
I don't believe there is another elected official in America today who gets heat from my colleagues like Bachmann does. Sarah Palin does, of course, but she is no longer serving in office.
Part of the problem Bachmann faces is not just a hostile national press, but an extremely hostile local media.

Invasion! U.S. 'sanctuary city' succumbs to illegals:
Predictably, mainstream media newspapers, including the Financial Times in London, chose to present Maywood as a victim to the recession, rather than to tell the whole story – that Maywood fell victim to illegal immigration,' Corsi wrote.

President Obama is good with words but less good with actual actions. At the end of the G20 summit yesterday, Obama wanted to sound like he was on the same page as his 19 other colleagues, agreeing rhetorically, that halving deficits by 2013 is a good idea. Funny, he’s got not a single legislative accomplishment to back up that claim.
At the G20 Obama said, ““What we have to recognize is that the recovery is still fragile…But we also have to recognize that if markets are skittish, and don’t have confidence that we can tackle the tough problems of our medium- and long-term debt and deficits, then that also is going to undermine our recovery,” he said."

What Is the Obama Doctrine and How Does It Relate to Our Founders' Vision?:
Now a year and a half into the Obama administration, the Obama Doctrine of diplomatic and military strategy is becoming clear. President Obama’s speech at West Point last month outlined the main elements of the Obama Doctrine: greater reliance on international institutions; substituting soft power for hard power; and a more subdued and less self-reliant America. To further delineate their views, Vice President Biden told the European Parliament in Brussels that the European Union has a legitimate claim to the title of “capital of the free world,” a claim that reveals his true feelings towards the socialist union of states. This doctrine was not the vision of our Founders."

This is not an endorsement of any of these products. I don't own any of them (though if the manufacturers are keen to find out my opinion, they can send me some non-returnable demos). But you can fill your shopping cart with these items for less than $3,000. The average American worker needs to work 152 hours to earn that much money."

We won the midterms.” Cheney was not making an economic case that deficits don’t matter. He was making a political case, with his reference to the midterm elections of 2002."

Petraeus to the Rescue | FrontPage Magazine:
President Obama yesterday accepted the resignation of his headstrong four-star commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal. Despite being handpicked by the President himself just over a year ago, as a sign of the administration’s commitment to win in Afghanistan by putting in place a well-respected leader with counter-insurgency experience, McChrystal is out, a victim of intemperate comments to a reporter who knew a good story when he heard one. The President, no doubt aware of the optics of sacking his own chosen general, has replaced him with General David Petraeus, the Commander in Chief of the Central Command. Petraeus, one of the most respected military men in the world, is an excellent choice that even the Republicans can support.
What the replacement of McChrystal with Petraeus will mean for the war in Afghanistan remains unclear, but it will certainly be significant."

1,300 Prison Inmates Received $9 Million In Home Buyer Tax Credit - The Consumerist:
As always happens when the government puts tons of cash up for grabs, scam-happy people will line up to take advantage of it. And a new report says that nearly 10% of the 15,000 folks caught scamming the government for the recent home buyer tax credit were doing it from behind bars.
According to a report issued by the Treasury Dept.'s inspector general, 1,295 prisoners, including 241 serving life sentences, somehow managed to receive $9.1 million in credits, despite being locked up at the time.
The report clarifies that these were not prisoners filing joint returns with spouses in the outside world, so there's no way these cons could have purchased a home during the period for which the tax credit was available."

A Sad Day:
The flap about General Stanley McChrystal's 'resignation' was nobody's finest hour. But there are some painful lessons in all this that go beyond any of the individuals involved-- the general, the president or any of the officials at the Pentagon or the State Department.
What is far more important than all these individuals put together are the lives of the tens of thousands of Americans fighting in Afghanistan. What is even more important is the national security of this country.
It is certainly not politic for a general or his staff to express their contempt for civilian authorities publicly. But what is far more important-- from the standpoint of national security-- is whether what those authorities have done deserves contempt."

When Adolf Hitler was building up the Nazi movement in the 1920s, leading up to his taking power in the 1930s, he deliberately sought to activate people who did not normally pay much attention to politics.
Such people were a valuable addition to his political base, since they were particularly susceptible to Hitler's rhetoric and had far less basis for questioning his assumptions or his conclusions.
'Useful idiots' was the term supposedly coined by V.I. Lenin to describe similarly unthinking supporters of his dictatorship in the Soviet Union."

More than ANYTHING else, education about the foundations of our great nation holds the key! My Grand-daughter told me yesterday she's now a freshman in HS, and has yet to study a drop of American History. She says she can't wait til' next year when she does. Enraged to engaged: Tea party backers explain why:
Bill Warner is hardly a naive man. He ran his own engineering firm for three decades, and sold the assets just before the economy tanked. He built his dream home on a majestic hill abutting a national park, back when the housing market was steady. While some neighbors have since been foreclosed upon, Warner is resurfacing his flagstone deck.
And so he understands that in the world of politics, his little group—the Lincoln Club of the Morongo Basin—is but a molecule in the figurative drop in the bucket of power and influence.
Its stated purpose is 'to promote, educate and advance conservative principles of fiscal responsibility, small limited government, free enterprise, the rule of law, private property rights, and the preservation and protection of individual liberty.' The organization has some 25 members and has raised $10,000.

FOXNews.com - Napolitano: Internet Monitoring Needed to Fight Homegrown Terrorism:
WASHINGTON -- Fighting homegrown terrorism by monitoring Internet communications is a civil liberties trade-off the U.S. government must make to beef up national security, the nation's homeland security chief said Friday.
As terrorists increasingly recruit U.S. citizens, the government needs to constantly balance Americans' civil rights and privacy with the need to keep people safe, said Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.
But finding that balance has become more complex as homegrown terrorists have used the Internet to reach out to extremists abroad for inspiration and training. Those contacts have spurred a recent rash of U.S.-based terror plots and incidents."

FT.com / China - US manufacturing crown slips
And they are surprised by this HOW? As a small manufacturer...I have so many unfunded mandates that have NOTHING to do with manufacturing my product.
Do they....NO!
Do we require even a slightly even playing field...NO!
All we ask is that the playing field get level....then let the best man ( or woman ) win! But when you are competing against companies that have no OSHA, Universal Health Care, Environmental mandate, Insurance, wage controls, pending Cap & Trade...etc....etc.......how CAN WE?
I don't begrudge any of these expenses ( well, that's somewhat shaded lie ) but at least I semi understand their worth. However when you compete against nations with none of this expense.....it's not competition, it's slaughter.
FT.com / China - US manufacturing crown slips:
The US remained the world’s biggest manufacturing nation by output last year, but is poised to relinquish this slot in 2011 to China – thus ending a 110-year run as the number one country in factory production.
The figures are revealed in a league table being published on Monday by IHS Global Insight, a US-based economics consultancy."
