Much has been made in the recent weeks and months about the French health care system, which was ranked first by the World Health Organization (WHO), as a model for US health care reform. The French system spends considerably more (11% of GDP) than the single-payer systems of Canada and the UK but considerably less than the US (16% of GDP). The French system has been described as one that avoids rationing; where doctors have freedom to prescribe whatever treatment and order whatever tests they want; and where a resident of France gets whatever service he or she desires, regardless of ability to pay."
