Government lowers growth estimate for 1st quarter - Yahoo! Finance:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The government lowered its estimate of how much the economy grew in the first quarter of the year, noting that consumers spent less than it previously thought.

Gross domestic product rose by 2.7 percent in the January-to-March period, the Commerce Department said Friday. That was less than the 3 percent estimate for the quarter that the government released last month. It was also much slower than the 5.6 percent pace in the previous quarter."

House, Senate leaders finalize details of sweeping financial overhaul:

'It's a great moment. I'm proud to have been here,' said a teary-eyed Sen. Christopher J. Dodd (D-Conn.), who as chairman of the Senate Banking Committee led the effort in the Senate. 'No one will know until this is actually in place how it works. But we believe we've done something that has been needed for a long time. It took a crisis to bring us to the point where we could actually get this job done.'"

Harris: Obama knew of Blagojevich plot :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Gov. Blagojevich:

A top aide to former Gov. Rod Blagojevich said he believed Barack Obama knew of Blagojevich's plot to win himself a presidential Cabinet post in exchange for appointing Valerie Jarrett to the U.S. Senate.

John Harris, Blagojevich's former chief of staff, testified Wednesday in the former governor's corruption trial that three days after the Nov. 4, 2008, presidential election, the ex-governor told Harris he felt confident Obama knew he wanted to swap perks."

Karl Rove: Obama and the Woes of the Democrats - WSJ.com:

Democrats are acknowledging they'll lose ground in the midterms. The only question is how much. Today, the evidence points to quite a lot.

The most important indicator is the president's job approval. In the Real Clear Politics average of the last two weeks' polls, President Obama has a 48% approval and 47% disapproval rating. This points to deep Democratic losses. The president's approval rating last November was 54% when his party was trounced in New Jersey and Virginia."

Texas Rep. Jeb Hensarling, according to the WSJ, changed the definition of 'financial company' to include Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. As Politico explains, this means that they would be subject to the same resolution authority that dictates the liquidation process for failing banks. 'This process is paid for by the sale of the failing company's assets and/or through assessments on other financial companies, possibly putting the Street in line to pay for the liquidation of the troubled housing giants.'"

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton just confirmed that the feds plan to sue to stop the law. Today's ouster of Gen. Stanley McChrystal was the just the latest in a line of conflicts between top military commanders and presidents. But what's interesting is that the ouster of McChrystal is being portrayed as the proper course of action to restore unity and reinforce civilian control of the military, but when Admiral William Fallon resigned as head of Central Command in 2008, it was covered as if the Bush administration couldn't handle disagreements, and Democrats went on the attack."

Petraeus to the Rescue | FrontPage Magazine

Petraeus to the Rescue | FrontPage Magazine:

President Obama yesterday accepted the resignation of his headstrong four-star commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal. Despite being handpicked by the President himself just over a year ago, as a sign of the administration’s commitment to win in Afghanistan by putting in place a well-respected leader with counter-insurgency experience, McChrystal is out, a victim of intemperate comments to a reporter who knew a good story when he heard one. The President, no doubt aware of the optics of sacking his own chosen general, has replaced him with General David Petraeus, the Commander in Chief of the Central Command. Petraeus, one of the most respected military men in the world, is an excellent choice that even the Republicans can support.

What the replacement of McChrystal with Petraeus will mean for the war in Afghanistan remains unclear, but it will certainly be significant."

1,300 Prison Inmates Received $9 Million In Home Buyer Tax Credit - The Consumerist:

As always happens when the government puts tons of cash up for grabs, scam-happy people will line up to take advantage of it. And a new report says that nearly 10% of the 15,000 folks caught scamming the government for the recent home buyer tax credit were doing it from behind bars.

According to a report issued by the Treasury Dept.'s inspector general, 1,295 prisoners, including 241 serving life sentences, somehow managed to receive $9.1 million in credits, despite being locked up at the time.

The report clarifies that these were not prisoners filing joint returns with spouses in the outside world, so there's no way these cons could have purchased a home during the period for which the tax credit was available."

A Sad Day

A Sad Day:

The flap about General Stanley McChrystal's 'resignation' was nobody's finest hour. But there are some painful lessons in all this that go beyond any of the individuals involved-- the general, the president or any of the officials at the Pentagon or the State Department.

What is far more important than all these individuals put together are the lives of the tens of thousands of Americans fighting in Afghanistan. What is even more important is the national security of this country.

It is certainly not politic for a general or his staff to express their contempt for civilian authorities publicly. But what is far more important-- from the standpoint of national security-- is whether what those authorities have done deserves contempt."

Is U.S. Now On Slippery Slope To Tyranny? - IBD - Investors.com:

When Adolf Hitler was building up the Nazi movement in the 1920s, leading up to his taking power in the 1930s, he deliberately sought to activate people who did not normally pay much attention to politics.

Such people were a valuable addition to his political base, since they were particularly susceptible to Hitler's rhetoric and had far less basis for questioning his assumptions or his conclusions.

'Useful idiots' was the term supposedly coined by V.I. Lenin to describe similarly unthinking supporters of his dictatorship in the Soviet Union."

As former counsel and trainer in political tactics for ACORN, President Obama used a well-known ACORN tactic, the shakedown, in getting BP to create the $20 billion escrow (slush!) fund without any law, legal controls, or binding rules to guide it on how, to whom, and how much those injured materially by the oil spill will be paid. Thuggery is unattractive. Ineffective thuggery even more so. Which may be one reason so many Americans have been reacting negatively to the response of Barack Obama and his administration to BP's gulf oil spill.

Enraged to engaged: Tea party backers explain why

More than ANYTHING else, education about the foundations of our great nation holds the key! My Grand-daughter told me yesterday she's now a freshman in HS, and has yet to study a drop of American History. She says she can't wait til' next year when she does. I told her the second she has her History textbook - let me have it for a weekend....then we'll discover the TRUTH together....FRESHMAN in HS before ANY American History taught.....

Enraged to engaged: Tea party backers explain why:

Bill Warner is hardly a naive man. He ran his own engineering firm for three decades, and sold the assets just before the economy tanked. He built his dream home on a majestic hill abutting a national park, back when the housing market was steady. While some neighbors have since been foreclosed upon, Warner is resurfacing his flagstone deck.

And so he understands that in the world of politics, his little group—the Lincoln Club of the Morongo Basin—is but a molecule in the figurative drop in the bucket of power and influence.

Its stated purpose is 'to promote, educate and advance conservative principles of fiscal responsibility, small limited government, free enterprise, the rule of law, private property rights, and the preservation and protection of individual liberty.' The organization has some 25 members and has raised $10,000.

'It's our way of doing what we can do,' he says."

WASHINGTON -- Fighting homegrown terrorism by monitoring Internet communications is a civil liberties trade-off the U.S. government must make to beef up national security, the nation's homeland security chief said Friday.

As terrorists increasingly recruit U.S. citizens, the government needs to constantly balance Americans' civil rights and privacy with the need to keep people safe, said Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.
