According to a May 24 draft proposal, the agency thinks government should be at the center of a media overhaul. The bureaucracy sees it as a problem that the Internet has introduced a wealth of information options to consumers, forcing media companies to adapt and experiment to meet changing market needs. FTC's policy staff fears this new reality.
'There are reasons for concern that experimentation may not produce a robust and sustainable business model for commercial journalism,' the report states. With no faith that the market will work things out for the better, government thinks it must come to the rescue.
The ideas being batted around to save the industry share a common theme: They are designed to empower bureaucrats, not consumers. For instance, one proposal would, 'Allow news organizations to agree jointly on a mechanism to require news aggregators and others to pay for the use of online content, perhaps through the use of copyright licenses.'"

In fact, sometime in 2008, I recall Karl Rove telling the world in his column that President Bush had read 95 books in 2006 and 51 books in 2007. I wrote those numbers down at the time because I was quite impressed and embarrassed because I could only muster perhaps 5 books a year due to my 'busy' schedule."

This may be common knowledge, and if it is, I apologize for my ignorance. If it isn't commonly known, it should be.
What I overheard is that among the penalties for those who are engaging in the peaceful protest of not filling out their Census forms, or incompletely filling them out, is that the individuals will be removed from the voter registration roles in their towns, and not be informed of thisunless the inquire directly, or until they go in to vote and are denied a ballot."

Well, at least when it comes packaged in cans and candy bars. Sugary sodas no longer have a home in the city's 250 beverage vending machines and unhealthy foods in the 75 snack machines in city facilities are next.
“I asked the staff to remove the high-calorie soda drinks from our vending machines,” Sculley said. “I'm a fitness person, and I care about our employees, and I want them to be healthy. And I think this is a very small gesture.”"

Sens. John Kerry and Joe Lieberman unveiled a long-awaited bill Wednesday that aims to curtail pollution blamed for global warming, reduce oil imports and create millions of energy-related jobs.
The 987-page bill, the product of more than seven months of negotiations and tweaked recently in response to the Gulf oil spill, also includes new protections for offshore drilling and for the first time would set a price on carbon dioxide emissions produced by coal-fired power plants and other large polluters.
The legislation aims to cut emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping greenhouse gases by 17 percent by 2020 and by more than 80 percent by 2050. Both targets are measured against 2005 levels and are the same as those set by a House bill approved last year."

Gas prices are marching steadily upwards -- past three dollars at my local suburban station and a couple of dimes more than that in Chicago. Why? Part of the rise is seasonal in nature: demand increases going into summer to fill up those cars going on family vacations. Also, as summer proceeds into fall, refineries start refining more heating oil from crude and less gasoline. Part of the rise can be attributed to the lack of refineries in America -- government rules and regulations (and the NIMBY-Not In My Backyard dynamic) have halted the building of American refineries."
