WASHINGTON—The Obama administration is looking to lease an area in waters off the coast of Massachusetts for wind-energy projects.
The U.S. Interior Department asked wind-energy companies on Tuesday to determine whether they would be interested in building turbines within a 3,000 square-mile expanse of federal waters, south of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.
The so-called request for interest marks the first step in a leasing process that could allow wind-energy developers to produce 4,000 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 1.7 million households, Massachusetts' Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Ian Bowles said."
