It’s been 20 years since Iraq invaded Kuwait. The invasion drew U.S. forces into Saudi Arabia, into Kuwait and ultimately deep into Iraq. That first war against Saddam Hussein—or if you prefer, the first phase of the war against Saddam—ended with the Iraqi dictator barely clinging to power and U.S. forces taking up long-term residence in the region. But that was only the beginning, as many of us warned at the time. U.S. forces would return to Iraq in 2003 to finish what was left undone.
